Sequins in the broad daylight – almost a taboo in the world as we know it! Usually reserved for New Year eve parties, pageant queens and Halloween these gorgeous little shiny discs have earned themselves a wee bit of a tacky reputation! However, if styled the right way sequined outfits could look extremely chic, yes, even in the daytime!
Sequined separates were all over the SS16 runways and have hit stores around the world. Some of my favorite sequined pieces are the Isabel Marant sequined Leggings and the Dries Van Noten sequined Bralet. I’m also totally obsessing over sequined denims right now, sequined denim cut offs (like the ones I’m sporting in my look below), all over sequined jeans & sequined patched denims.
Not convinced? Below are a few ways you could style sequins in the day and stand out from the crowd without looking like a disco ball.
Styling Tip: Avoid wearing more than one sequined piece at a time and pare it down with a laid-back separate – for example a sequined pencil skirt would look great with a plain basic tank or tee & keep accessories to the minimum to avoid looking like a Christmas tree!
* A Sequined Tee Dress – A sporty all-over sequined dress would look great if worn with sneakers and a cross body bag.
*A Sequined Tank – A super chic, casual separate, wear it with luxe joggers or baggy jeans for a laid back day look.
* Sequined Denim – Super easy to style, wear these with a distressed tee like I have in my look or a well tailored cotton off-the-shoulder top for a more formal day-time look.
*A Sequined mini – most of us save this one for the nightclub, but you don’t have to! Pair it with a light weight sweater and sneaks and you’re good to go!
*Sequined blazer – Bring this one out on a chilly day and throw it over leggings and an oversized shirt. Perfect for an effortless yet power-packed look.
For those of you who aren’t big on shiny outfits, below are some ways you could incorporate this trend into your wardrobe more subtly –
*Try and find casual separates that have just a small element of sequins on them, for example a tee with sequined sleeves or a tank with a sequined slogan (Lanvin has a pretty cool one).
*Sequined or Shimmery pumps – think Miu Miu pumps, wear these with a basic tee dress or with your denim overalls and they’ll instantly make your outfit more dressy without the shimmer being too in the face.
